My thoughts about content mills

Loom Content mills. The sites that pay you $5, $10, or $25 for an article (usually, the lower end). You’ve probably read some, or even a lot, of the posts about content mills that have popped up in the freelance writing blogosphere and forums over the last few months.

And there have been a lot of posts. Passionate denunciations of the content mills and the people who dare to write for them. Passionate defenses of content mills and the people who are proud to write for them. Detailed breakdowns of time spent and money earned (or potentially earned). I sometimes think that the time all of those folks spent attacking and defending could have been better spent writing something else …

My thoughts? Just one: if you want to write for content mills, then feel free. It’s your choice. If doing that makes you happy, gives you a feeling of satisfaction, or pays some bills/funds some vices then that’s fine. Anyway, it’s not my place to tell another freelancer what to do or what (or for whom) to write.

Content mills are not for me, though. While I can write quickly with many of the best of them, I prefer 1) quality over quantity, and 2) to focus on higher-paying markets and clients.

That is all.
