Monetizing this space

Isn’t monetizing a horrible neologism? But it’s one that does get attention. Just so you know, I’m posting this in the interests of transparency and to give the fives of people who read this blog some insight into my motivations.

As you may or may not have noticed, there are a few ads here and there. One on the sidebar, and one that appears at the bottom of each post. On top of that, there are a handful of text link ads here and there. And you may have noticed the Recommended Books tab at the top of the page. All of that is an attempt to make a little money in this space.

To be honest, making money from this blog (and the others that I run or help run) hasn’t been all that important to me. In fact, it wasn’t until earlier this year that I decided to try making a little money from the blog. More of an experiment than anything else. With the ads, I don’t expect to get rich, or even to make a tidy sum each month. That would be nice, but … If I can make enough to pay for my Web hosting that would be great. If not, then not.

But I want to keep the ads as far out of the face of you, the reader, as possible. I hope I’ve succeeded, and I hope the ads don’t turn anyone off. Let me know if you have a strong opinion either way about the ads by leaving a comment.
