Writing with confidence
I was planning to bang out a post on this subject, but someone beat me to it. It’s a great post, and offers three pieces of advice for not just writing with confidence, but also just writing well:
- Don’t take it personally
- You’ve gotta go from 0% to 100%
- Be ready to push yourself
Read the post to understand what all that means …
I definitely agree with one point made in the post:
It means that along the way some of what you’ll write will be good and some won’t be good ? that’s just how it goes.
While he’s confining that thought to the content of a single writing project, it really applies to everything that you write. Whether it’s articles, blog posts, scripts, short stories, or whatever, some pieces will be better than others. Some will sing, others will just murmur.
The only thing I’d add to that list is to look at your writing, find your weaknesses, and attack them. Maybe you’re not great at describing a scene, or maybe you can’t use allusions as well as you’d like to. It really does boost your confidence when you overcome (or even just make headway against) the weak spots in your writing.
