The end of Google Notebook, and what you can do

I read the news that Google is ending further development of Google Notebook. I was a more than just a bit surprised. But then I read a little deeper.

Google Notebook isn’t going away. It’s just not going to be enhanced, and after the drop-dead date and Notebook won’t be available to new users. Existing users will still be able to use Notebook. That’s good news if, like me, you use Google Notebook quite a bit to … well, to take notes while doing research on the Web.

Of course, if you don’t want to keep using Google Notebook, you have a few options for getting your notes out of the application and moved elsewhere:

  • Copy and paste. The venerable method, but slow and inefficient.

  • Export each notebook. You can save the contents of a notebook as a Web page, or export the notebook to a document in Google Docs (assuming you have a Google Docs account). There’s a third option, which is kind of geeky and I won’t mention it here because most people won’t use it.

  • Just forget about it and start from scratch with something else. OK, not a very good option …
