Becoming a technical writer
Over the years, people have asked me about how they can go about becoming a technical writer. Which is why I wrote this post over at my business’ blog. It’s my take on the subject; your experience will probably vary.
Fellow technical writing blogger Tom Johnson linked to that post and garnered some interesting comments.
Overall, technical writing to be an interesting and potentially profitable career option. But as one of the commenters on Tom’s post pointed out:
Don’t get into Technical Documentation because you want to be a writer – get into Technical Documentation because you want to be a Communicator.
If you still want to be a writer as well – then leave the literary prose for the evenings and weekends.
But as with any other area of writing, success in technical writing comes down to passion. If you’re only in the profession for a pay packet, then chances are you won’t be fulfilled.
