Full screen writing on the Web with Darkcopy   Post2PDF

As many of you know, I’m a fan of minimalist writing tools. I’ve written about a few that I enjoy using here, here, and here.

But what happens if you don’t want to install yet another piece of software on your computer? Why not turn to the Web. While I enjoy using a Web app called Writeboard, I recently stumbled across another interesting tool called DarkCopy.

darkcopy1.png DarkCopy bills itself as a “Web-based clone of WriteRoom” (upon which my favourite distraction-free editor, JDarkRoom, is based). As you can see from the screen capture on the right, DarkCopy looks like any other Web page. Well, sort of. But when you click Start full screen a new browser window opens. All you have to do is start typing.

darkcopy_jacuba.png You don’t get much in the way of frills. Actually, you get nothing in the way of frills. All you can really do is type and save your work as a text file. If you want to check spelling, you either have to save the text file and open it in a text editor or word processor. Or you can use an online tool like Jacuba Spell to check the spelling. Luckily, you can use Jacuba Spell from within a Web browser. To use Jacuba Spell with DarkCopy, you have to pop out of full-screen mode. However, if Firefox is your browser of choice, it will highlight any spelling mistakes as you type in full-screen mode.

DarkCopy is simple, but it works. And if you need a quick way to write without any distractions, all you need is an Internet connection and you’re ready to go.
