How I blog
Like many of you, I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. By day, I’m a partner in a technical writing consultancy. By night, I’m a partner in a technical communications consultancy. And a husband. And a father. And a freelance writer. And someone who contributes to three blogs. And finding the time to write and blog is tough.
Early to rise
Luckily, though, I’ve found a way to do the blogging. At least, a lot more of it than I usually would. How? For some reason or another, I usually wake up at around 5:00 or so in the morning — whether I want to or not. Instead of lying in bed staring at the ceiling and waiting for the alarm to go off, I made a conscious effort to get out of bed and write. Not just this blog, but other things as well. I managed to get a lot done. If it wasn’t writing, then it was collecting links and information for posts.
I try to write a week’s worth of blog post ahead of time and let WordPress automatically publish them each day. I bet you didn’t even notice it was happening …
Writing the posts
I generally write the posts for all of the blogs to which I contribute offline in a text editor, formatting each post using a little something called Markdown. I’ve written at length about using Markdown. I like it and it works for me.
Interestingly enough, I don’t bother to convert the posts for this blog to HTML. I’ve installed a WordPress plugin that takes care of the dirty work for me. All I have to do is copy and paste my Markdown-formatted posts into WordPress and fire away.
Overall, this method works pretty well. I’m hoping to get up to 15 posts a week for all of my blogs — right now, I’m averaging about 10 or 11.
