Where do you write?
Over at the Contented blog, Rachel McAlpine talks about her setup for writing. Her optimal writing area may surprise you.
But she does make a good point:
Don’t be too hard on yourself if you find you can’t get cracking on a writing project. There are genuine barriers, and one of them is finding the right setup.
In my house, I write at both a desk in my basement and a table in my dining room. Both of surfaces are spartan, and both are home to a ThinkPad notebook compute. Sometimes, when the weather is warmer, I take one of those ThinkPads and write on my enclosed porch.
But as I’m known for being able to sleep anywhere, I can also write just about anywhere. On the subway, in a coffee shop, or at the library. All I need is a computer or a dead-tree notebook (Moleskine preferred).
And like Rachel McAlpine, I bought myself an Asus Eee PC. Unlike her, though, I get along with my Eee PC. It’s small and light enough to carry anywhere. I get a lot done with it (you can read about my adventures with the Eee PC here and here.
In the end, though, I get more done at my desks than anywhere else. All the other writing I do — with the Eee PC or on paper — is just a lead up to the serious work that I do at my desks.
Where do you write? And where are you most comfortable and productive? Feel free to leave a comment.
