A paen to the Psion Series 5   Post2PDF

In 1998, I bought my first PDA. Actually, it was more that that. It was a portable writing too. The device was the Psion Series 5. It fit comfortably in the palms of my hands, was light, had an actual keyboard, and it had a built-in word processor (among other software).

I used that little device for about three years. And it paid for itself within a few months of my buying it; believe me, it wasn’t cheap! But I found the Psion Series 5 to be an almost perfect portable writing machine. It was small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. I could flip it open and type away even on a crowded subway train. And I could transfer my files over to a PC for final formatting and submission to an editor.

I eventually sold my Psion on eBay. But I do miss its portability and wickedly cool form factor. And I’m not the only writer who fell in love with this little device. Check out this article which looks at the Psion Series 5 in some depth.

Yes, I had a Hewlett Packard HP620LX which finally seems to have died a death. Same idea, full keyboard. I don’t understand why more companies these days don’t go for the same design. Far better than the usual palmtops. Like you I used to type away happily on the bus.
