Task management, redux
A short while back, wrote about how I generally keep track of my tasks. But I’ve learned that you need to be flexible, due to either limitations of the available technology or due to circumstances beyond your control.
Take, for instance, my current gig. I’m working on contract at a large financial firm which locks down user desktops — you can’t install any software that’s not on the approved list. Fair enough.
But I like to keep a list of my daily tasks handy; it keeps me on track. The to do list feature in the corporate email software (Lotus Notes) isn’t really adequate for this. So, I decided to go low tech.
I fired up Windows Notepad and created a text file that I update at the end of each day. The file lists the task that I plan to complete, along with a status — either Done or In Progress. There’s also a set of goals for the current week. At the end of each day, I get rid of the items that I’ve finished and move anything else forward. Here’s a sample:
This just goes to show you that sometimes, a simple solution just works.
