Building your Web site with free designs

Quite a few writers want, or feel they need, a Web site. Building a good Web site can be easier said than done. Even if you know HTML and CSS, your design skills may be mediocre. That’s the problem I have. My Web site has gone through three revisions over the years. And while it’s looked OK it wasn’t anything special.

Recently, I decided to redesign my site. As usual, though, my lack of design skills made that difficult. Then, I stumbled on the Open Source Web Design site. It’s packed with over 1,600 Web site designs. And many of them are quite good. If you browse through the site, you’ll probably find a design that is right for you. The beauty of the designs is that you can use and modify them as you see fit.

I found a design that more of less met my needs. In fact, the colour scheme matched my lame logo. I tweaked the design a bit – including changing the size of some fonts and moved the navigation menu from the top of the page to the right side.

The content of the site is the same, but the look is a lot better. I don’t expect the Web site to start generating huge amounts of business for me but when I refer potential clients there at least they’ll have something nice to look at.
