On notebooks

I find that note taking has two forms. The first form is premeditated – I’m consciously noting information from a book, online, or during an interview. The second for is spontaneous. I get an idea or see something that catches my imagination, and I jot it down in a notebook.

Because I like to travel light, I generally carry a Hipster PDA or a pocket notebook with me to jot down those spontaneous notes. Lately, though, I’ve been running into the durability problem with both my Hipster and my usual pocket notebook. But while running errands last week I found a place that sold Moleskine notebooks. The shop isn’t out of my way, which is good when I need replacements. Without a second thought, I whipped out my wallet and bought two. It’s the best money I’ve spent in a long while.

I don’t know whether using a Moleskine notebook will make me more productive or allow me to jot down more ideas and observations. But I’ll be darned if that little notebook isn’t rapidly filling up.
