Confusing Words is a great Web site that lists over 3,000 words that can confuse both readers and writers. It not only explains commonly confused words like "affect" and "effect," but also has descriptions of words like "arroyo" and "gulch".

The site's search engine is pretty good but there doesn't seem to be an actual list that you can consult.
