Parochial thinking
When filling out the application for a media fellowship, freelancer Jenn Shreve was told not to bother applying because she couldn't prove that she's a "real journalist."
The crux of the argument against her is that because she's not a full-time staffer at a publication, she couldn't prove her credentials. This despite the fact that Shreve has been in the business for a number of years, has quite the list of credits behind her, and was an editor at Salon.
If that doesn't make Shreve a journalist, I don't know what does. I should note, though, that Jenn Shreve actually refers to herself as an independent writer. But, still ...
