The typewriter: the ultimate writing machine?

I was reading a Popular Science article by Larry Smith who spent 10 days living as if it was 1954 -- without all of today's technology, including his beloved iBook and iMac. In fact, much to his chagrin and frustration Smith had to do all of his writing on a Royal manual typewriter.

This passage from the article explains why some people view the typewriter as the perfect writing tool:

"Typewriter aficionado Tony Casillo thinks the typewriter made people more creative, forcing the Ray Bradburys and Jack Kerouacs to stop and think before spewing words on the page.23 'The typewriter,' he says, 'is a great example of a perfect combination of function and form.'"
