Why do you write?

A lot of people ask me the question "Why do you write?" As if to say I should be doing real work, like trading stocks, building houses, or consulting ...

My stock answer is that writing is about the only thing I can do with any degree of competence. Which is true. And while I love to write, I have no artistic pretensions -- my work isn't for the ages. I write to make money.

And there's nothing crass about making money. Just ask those starving poets who write pro wrestler biographies for ECW Press.
