Test driving UbuntuOne

For a blog that I said I’d let lie fallow, this space has filling up with quite a bit of content lately …

Anyway, on to the important stuff. Earlier today, I heard that UbuntuOne (Canonical’s Web-based file syncing/storing/sharing service) was beta testing and was accepting request for invitations. Of course, I jumped on it. And, to my surprise, I got an invite within a couple of hours.

I duly logged in, downloaded the UbuntuOne client, and started playing. UbuntuOne is a lot like another service I use called DropBox, although the client is better integrated with Ubuntu. In fact, UbuntuOne only seems to work with Canonical’s flavour of Linux.

So far, things have been pretty smooth. Syncing can be slow, but that’s to be expected — even DropBox can be slow. One interesting feature of UbuntuOne is that it detects when there are differences between the files and folders on your computer and the ones you’ve uploaded. The folder, for example, are copied and named (folder_name).conflict. For example, writing.conflict.

I’m not entirely sure that I like that, however. Having everything double up like that really eats into my storage limit. I guess I could always delete the .conflict folders. And I’m sure that there’s more to this than meets my tired eyes. I’ll have to investigate a little more.

As for the plans, there are two — a free one which offers 2 GB of storage , and one for $10 (USD) a month offering 10 GB of storage. The only difference between the plans is the amount of data they hold; all other features are the same.

I’ll definitely be working and playing with UbuntuOne over the next few days. Could be a keeper.

Update: One of my contacts on identi.ca tested the UbuntuOne client under Xubuntu. He said that he had to use Xfapplet to run it, but all worked well. I’m assuming that it works under Kubuntu as well. If you have any information, feel free to leave a comment.
